Section 1: Install Plover (Windows)

How to Install Plover on Your Windows Computer

Plover is an open-source stenography software that allows you to use a stenotype machine (or compatible keyboard) to input text quickly and efficiently on your computer. This guide will walk you through the steps to install Plover on a Windows computer. 

Step 1: Visit the Plover Wiki

To begin, please visit the Plover Installation Guide on the Plover Wiki. This page contains all the information you need to install Plover on different operating systems.

Step 2: Download the Windows Installer

  • Scroll down to the section titled "Install Plover on Windows."
  • Click on the link that says "Download the Windows installer here."
  • The installer will automatically start downloading.

Step 3: Locate and launch the Downloaded Installer

  • Once the download is complete, open your Downloads folder. You should see a file named something like plover-x.x.x-win64.setup (the exact version number may vary).
  • Double-click on the installer file to begin the installation process.

Step 4: Windows Defender SmartScreen (Optional)

  • When you run the installer, you may see a warning from Windows Defender SmartScreen:
    "Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk."
  • Don’t worry—this warning appears because Plover is open-source software and not recognized by Microsoft. 
  • To continue installation, Click on "More Info."
  • Then, click on the "Run Anyway" button that appears.

Step 5: Follow the Onscreen Instructions

  • The Plover installer will open.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
  • You may be prompted to choose an installation location and agree to the terms of use. Use the default settings unless you have specific requirements.

Step 6: Launch Plover

  • Once the installation is complete, you can launch Plover from your Start menu or from the shortcut on your desktop.
  • Congratulations! Plover is now installed and ready to use with your steno keyboard.
